Successful Surgery

He did it!

Preop room- such a big crib for this little guy...

His cute little outfit

Emmett is one Tiny but Mighty Fighter

We arrived at 5:30 and checked in. Emmett was very calm in the preop rooms for fasting the whole night and being super exhausted. He just wanted cuddles, and he had all the nurses going, “oooohhh and awwwww.” They already love him.

They took vitals, changed the diaper, put on the gown. I signed the papers, met the team, and he was on his way. The nurse carried him to surgery, and he was adorable and already loopy from some pre op meds.

He went into surgery right on time. 7:30. I met Robert in the waiting room, and we waited. It wasn’t that long. We got a call from the nurse about 2 hours in saying he was being closed up! Everything went well!

The surgeon, amazing and wonderful Dr. Arsdin, came down to chat with us. It was a little intimidating at first because he took us to a special consultation room so other patrons could not overhear. Even though it seemed dreadful going into this room, the conversation was completely positive. He repaired the mitral valve, released the pressure, and looks great. The team is optimistic in a healthy life from here on out with a possible future replacement valve when he is older.

An hour goes by, and our pediatric cardiologist came down as well. He said the same things but with a couple numbers. The pressure was at a 20 when he went into surgery, and now it is a 4. As long as it stays at a 4 range, he can live with this repair. Once it starts to get into a more severe range, he would need future surgeries.

Oh 2020 you have been a blast.... said no one ever. The part that sucks the most is one parent at a time. It’s hard to go in, see this tiny, beautiful, angelic baby on this gigantic hospital bed. It’s hard to manage the emotions completely by yourself because your significant other is stuck in a waiting room. If you wish to see his after surgery photo (It shows his scar), click the link

So, Robert and I took turns visiting, but the nurse stated that it would be best to let him rest and not hear our voices. They wish to keep him sedated because of the breathing tube. Tomorrow, if all looks good, the tube will be removed and Tiny but Mighty Em will move into a hospital crib.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. They definitely helped!
