Surgery Time

Maybe

Kaiser is really great about the "maybe" terminology. Yesterday, they had told us possibly some time this week he will have surgery. That's stressful in itself. Although the surgery is a Laparoscopy one, it's still surgery, recovery, and possible infection. Needless to say, the stress level is at a constant upward spike, and I am happy to share all the news via blog so that I don't have to repeat myself on the phone. Those that know me, KNOW I hate talking on the phone. When I talk about Em, I am basically on the breaking point of tears, and to talk on the phone right now would be a disaster.

Moving on...

Kaiser called last night and said "maybe" he will have surgery today. They wanted me to arrive before 9 to sign the consent form. When I arrived there was hustle and bustle. Em's room is VERY popular. He has a huge team here at Kaiser. I have said it before, and I'll say it again. I love the huge team of doctors and specialists working with him, but this poor kid needs to nap...

You could tell he was TIRED. Eyes were bloodshot red, dark circles (thanks to mommy's genes), and tears rolling down his face. The nurse said, "He is STARVING! he can't eat before his procedure."

"Oh, so it's happening today?"

Nurse, "They didn't call you?"

I say, "Nope."

It's happening... Surgery is happening today!

In a couple hours... I gave him his meds, while the nurse attached the fluids back to his arm IV that he hates. He is screaming at this point, and nothing will soothe him. Emmett just wants to be held at all times, but he is connected to EVERYTHING! I pick him up anyway, he places his head on my chest, and makes the cutest coo ever. Em doesn't really say much. He doesn't say dada, mama, or baba really. This gesture just melts my heart.

Well, it didn't last long. The doctors usually do their rounds around 8:30/9, and I had thought they already did them... Boy, was I wrong. The entire team came in and ruined our moment. They are trying to talk to me, but Em is officially screaming, and I'm pretty sure the ward next door can hear. It's useless. Move on guys!

Little did I know that there was another team right behind them. Remember, he has a very popular room. This time it was the surgery team. Finally, the people I want to talk to. I start bouncing Em a little to soothe the screams. I stick the binky in his mouth, and I listen to the team talk one by one through their double masks and face shield. Covid.

Here's the gist from what I tried to understand through the mumble of the PPE. Emmett will receive the surgery in a couple hours. It will be a Mini Button G-Tube. This is a very minimal bulge on his stomach and won't really require special clothing (woo Hoo). He will also get the Kangaroo pump which, according to Amber, is one of the best ones!

Things are looking great.

Surgery

It went super well. He recovered quickly and is doing amazing. In 24 hours he will try to feed by his new tube. I officially have a tubie baby. He is so strongS thank you to those that have had him in your thoughts/prayers. This is not an easy year for our family, and it is definitely appreciated.
